When I was sent to Vietnam my MOS was 11B10, when I got to Vietnam my MOS was 11C10. I knew nothing about mortars but I was assigned to the 4th platoon in "Charlie" company and I learned mortars on the job. Ammo bearer, gunner on the 81 mortar, I humped the 60mm mortar but most of my time with the 4th platoon I was an FO forward observer and went out on ambush with one of the other platoons (1st platoon mostly). In May 1969 while on "stand down" a group of us drunks went to the recruiter in Cuchi to re- up for base camp jobs, went back to the field & forgot about it. In December 1969 I came back from RR and was told that my extension came through, the recruiter said you can be home for Christmas, so I took it and left Vietnam on Christmas day. So many people were leaving Vietnam at that time, there were not enough planes, they had to fly in empty planes and on Christmas day the flight crews were all volunteers.

My second tour was outside of Qui Nhon in the central highlands (Co D, 58th Inf, 93rd MP Bn) where I met 3 other members of "C" company (Brown, Stewart & Anderson) Left Vietnam & the Army in Oct. 1970.............
