This was my first invitation to attend a change of command ceremony at Ft Carson. LTC Garey was also the first battalion commander I was to meet as a Vietnam veteran. He was a gracious host as was his entire staff and extended a warm well during his time as commander of the 2-12th. I must have been sound asleep because I failed to take any photos of this event.

The change of command was slated for Founder's Field, but do to inclimate weather the outdoor event was moved into the Events Center, a smaller venue, but certainly much warmer. Craig Schoonderwoerd accompanied me on the trip. We took advantage of being on post and explored the sites.
During his military service, Pearl served in various combat and operational assignments outside the United States, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan (twice) as both a Battalion and Brigade Commander leading soldiers in those efforts. He retired after 30 years of service in 2020
